How do I get the most out of my HR experience?

I’m working at a large company as an HR Assistant. I am a contractor and my contract runs out in October. I don’t know if I will be kept on full time and just want to get as much experience in HR as possible. Basically I want to learn and do more then what I am now. I have made this known to my coworkers and my supervisor. I’ve been taking all opportunities to gain skills in PeopleSoft and now I’m wondering, aside from this, what other skills can I develop and how? Any and all advice would be great and much appreciated.

Can HR request that you tell your manager about an interview?
